What Do Skin Boosters Actually Do?

Skin boosters are injectable treatments that work on the quality of the skin rather than the shape of the face. Delivered through a series of fine microinjections, they place hyaluronic acid and supporting nutrients into the skin itself, where they draw in moisture and support the skin’s own collagen and elastin production.

They are the treatment Dr Sateei most often recommends to patients who say their skin looks tired, dull or dehydrated but who would not like anything about their appearance changed. At her London clinic, options including Profhilo, Belotero Revive and Teosyal Redensity 1 are used according to what the skin needs. Results vary between individuals and build across a course rather than appearing after one session.

How Skin Boosters Work

Skin boosters and dermal fillers use similar ingredients to do quite different jobs. A filler is placed in one location to provide structure and add volume. A skin booster is dispersed evenly through the skin across many small injection points, where it is not intended to create shape at all.

Once in place, the hyaluronic acid draws in and holds water, which improves hydration, plumpness and light reflection. Over the following weeks it also supports fibroblast activity, encouraging the skin to produce its own collagen and elastin. Some products add glycerol, antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins and minerals to support that process further.

This is why skin boosters are a course rather than a single treatment. The hydrating effect appears relatively quickly; the improvement in firmness and texture depends on the collagen response, which takes longer. Dr Sateei selects between products at consultation, as they differ meaningfully. Profhilo spreads widely and is placed at set points to improve laxity and hydration across a broader area. Belotero Revive and Teosyal Redensity 1 are more focused on hydration and fine texture. Choosing between them is a clinical decision based on your skin.

Who Skin Boosters Are For

Skin boosters may suit you if you are looking to:

  • Improve hydration in skin that feels dry, tight or dehydrated
  • Refine texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and roughness
  • Restore radiance to dull or tired-looking skin on the face, neck, décolletage or hands
  • Improve skin quality without any change to facial shape or volume
  • Build a foundation of skin health before or alongside other aesthetic treatments

They are not the right treatment where the concern is lost volume or structural descent, as skin boosters are not designed to lift or add shape. They also will not remove established pigmentation, which is a skincare and peel question rather than an injectable one. Where either applies, Dr Sateei will point you towards the more appropriate route.

As injectable treatments, skin boosters are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Your skin and medical history will be reviewed at consultation.

What to Expect, and When You Will See Results

Skin boosters are usually delivered as a course of two sessions spaced two to three weeks apart, using a series of fine microinjections into the target area. Numbing cream can be applied. Downtime is minimal, although small raised bumps at injection points are normal for a few hours to a day, and some redness, swelling or minor bruising can occur and typically settles within a few days.

Initial results become visible within two to three weeks of the first session as hydration improves. The firmer, smoother quality develops more gradually as collagen and elastin production responds over the following one to three months. Results typically last four to six months, after which maintenance sessions help sustain the benefit. Dr Sateei confirms the right course and maintenance interval for your skin at consultation.

Benefits of Skin Boosters

  • Deep hydration: replenishes the skin’s moisture reservoirs for a plumper, more supple appearance
  • No change to facial shape: improves quality and texture without adding volume or contour
  • Works beyond the face: treats the neck, décolletage and hands, where skin ages differently

Dr Ellie Sateei on Dermal Fillers

“Skin boosters are one of the most underrated treatments I offer, because they work on the foundation, hydration and skin quality, rather than trying to change how you look. I choose between Profhilo, Belotero Revive and Redensity 1 based on exactly what your skin needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, and the results genuinely build with each session.”

Dr Ellie Sateei has over two decades of experience in dermatology and aesthetics.

Skin Booster FAQs

What is the difference between a skin booster and a dermal filler?

A filler is placed in one location to add volume and structure. A skin booster is dispersed through the skin to improve hydration and quality, and is not intended to change facial shape.

How quickly do skin boosters work?

Hydration improvements are usually visible within two to three weeks of the first session. Firmness and texture develop more gradually over one to three months as collagen responds.

How long do skin booster results last?

Typically four to six months, depending on the product and the individual. Maintenance sessions help sustain the benefit.

How many skin booster sessions will I need?

Usually a course of two, spaced two to three weeks apart. Dr Sateei confirms the right course for your skin at consultation.

Will skin boosters lift my face?

No. They improve skin quality and hydration but are not designed to lift or add structure. Where lifting is the goal, a different treatment is more appropriate.

Can skin boosters be used on the neck, chest or hands?

Yes. These areas have thinner skin that ages differently to the face and often respond well.

Skin boosters Aftercare and Recovery

Following skin booster treatment with Dr Ellie Sateei, most patients return to normal activity straight away. Small raised areas at each injection point are expected and are the most noticeable thing afterwards. These are the products sitting in the skin before it disperses, not the result, and they settle over the following hours to a day. Light bruising at injection points is common.

Aftercare summary

Skin booster treatment is placed into the skin itself, so the first day is about leaving it alone and letting it disperse. Aftercare for the first phase is deliberately plain: cleanse, protect, repair. No acids, no retinoids, nothing active. The barrier is doing the work and does not need help from anything else.

Pre-treatment guidance

To prepare for your appointment:

  • Arrive with clean skin, free from make-up
  • Eat beforehand, so you are comfortable during treatment
  • Where possible, and unless prescribed by your doctor, avoid blood-thinning medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen in the days before treatment
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, which reduces the likelihood of bruising
  • Tell Dr Sateei about any active skin condition, cold sore or recent procedure in the area to be treated
  • If you have an event coming up, allow at least a week between treatment and the date

On the day, clinical photographs and consent are completed if not already done, the skin is cleansed thoroughly, and topical anaesthetic is applied for comfort. Treatment takes approximately 30 minutes following preparation.

What to expect immediately after

You may notice:

  • Small raised areas at each injection point, which usually settle within a few hours and sometimes take up to 24 hours
  • Redness across the treated area, settling within a few hours
  • Bruising at injection points, which is common and usually fades within a week
  • Mild tenderness to touch

These raised areas are expected and are not a complication. Please do not massage them unless Dr Sateei has asked you to.

Post-treatment care

For the first 24 hours

  • Avoid make-up over the treated area
  • Avoid touching, rubbing or pressing the area
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Avoid heat, including saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and sunbeds
  • Avoid swimming pools

For the first few days

  • Keep the area clean and use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or above daily, including on overcast days
  • Set aside retinoids, exfoliating acids and other active skincare until the skin has fully settled
  • Avoid facials, facial massage and other skin treatments for two weeks
  • Use only the products Dr Sateei has recommended

When will I see results

Skin booster treatment builds rather than appearing, which is the reason it is chosen.

  • Any raised areas settle within the first day
  • Skin often looks fresher and better hydrated within the first one to two weeks
  • The meaningful change in skin quality develops over the following weeks as the skin responds
  • A course is usually recommended, with the number of sessions and their spacing confirmed at consultation
  • Results vary between individuals

Skin booster treatment may not be appropriate if you have:

  • A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
  • Certain autoimmune conditions, or a skin disorder affecting the treatment area
  • A known sensitivity to any component of the product
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Suitability is confirmed at a full medical consultation before any treatment is carried out. When Dr Sateei judges that skin booster treatment is not the right approach, she will say so.

Skin Booster Aftercare and Recovery

Following skin booster treatment with Dr Ellie Sateei, most patients return to normal activity the same day. Small raised bumps at the injection points are expected and usually settle within 12 to 24 hours, along with any redness. Skin boosters are placed across the treated area in many small deposits rather than in a few deep ones, so what you feel afterwards tends to be spread evenly rather than concentrated. Improvement in hydration and skin quality develops over the following weeks rather than appearing on the day.

Aftercare summary

Skin boosters deliver hydration into the skin through a series of micro-injections, improving texture, elasticity and overall skin quality without changing facial shape. Because the treatment involves many entry points and prompts a genuine response in the tissue, the protocol adds Calecim Professional Serum morning and evening alongside barrier support. No acids and no retinoids while the skin settles.

Pre-treatment guidance

To prepare for your appointment:

  • Arrive with clean skin, free from make-up
  • Eat beforehand, so you are comfortable during treatment
  • Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment
  • Where possible and unless prescribed by your doctor, avoid blood-thinning medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen beforehand
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, which reduces the likelihood of bruising
  • Tell Dr Sateei about any active skin condition, cold sore or recent procedure in the treatment area

On the day, clinical photographs and consent are completed if not already done, and the skin is cleansed thoroughly. Topical anaesthetic may be applied for comfort. Treatment takes approximately 30 minutes following preparation.

What to expect immediately after

Skin boosters are well tolerated and most patients need no recovery time. You may notice:

  • Redness at and around the injection points
  • Small raised bumps where product has been placed, which settle as it disperses
  • Mild swelling or tenderness to touch
  • Light bruising in some areas

These are expected and usually resolve within 12 to 24 hours. Any bruising generally fades within a few days.

When will I see results

Skin boosters work on skin quality, which develops rather than appears.

  • Skin often feels more comfortable and hydrated within the first few days
  • Improvement in tone, texture and radiance develops over one to two weeks
  • Further benefit continues to build over the following weeks
  • A course is usually recommended, with the number of sessions and the interval confirmed at consultation

Duration varies with the product used and with the individual, and is usually in the range of six to nine months.

Who this treatment is not suitable for

Skin boosters may not be appropriate if you have:

  • An active skin infection, cold sore or open wound in the treatment area
  • A known allergy to hyaluronic acid or any component of the product
  • Certain autoimmune conditions or a skin disorder affecting the treatment area
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Suitability is confirmed at a full medical consultation, and the product is selected to suit your skin rather than chosen in advance.

When to contact us

Please contact the clinic if you experience:

  • Swelling that worsens rather than settles beyond 48 hours
  • Signs of infection, including increasing redness, heat or discharge
  • Pain that is severe or out of proportion to the treatment
  • Bumps that remain firm after a week
  • Any change in vision following treatment in the under-eye area

The Next Step

Skin boosters improve hydration, texture and radiance without changing the shape of your face. If your skin looks tired but you would not like your face changed, an assessment will establish whether a booster is the right foundation, or whether skincare or a peel should come first.
