What do Jawline fillers actually do?

A jawline softens for two different reasons, and they need different treatments. Either the bony support has receded, leaving less structure for the skin to sit over, or the skin and tissue have loosened while the underlying structure is largely intact.

Jawline filler addresses the first. A firmer product is placed along the jaw and at the angle of the jaw to restore definition, sharpening the line between the jaw and the neck. Where laxity is the dominant change, filler is the wrong tool, and adding volume to loose tissue tends to increase heaviness rather than improve definition.

At Dr Ellie Sateei’s London clinic, working out which of the two you have is the point of the consultation. Results vary between individuals.

How does Jawline filler works?

Treatment places a firm, structural product along the jaw, typically at the angle behind the jaw and forward along the border, with the chin usually treated alongside so the line has a defined point to run to.

Depth matters. Product placed deep against bone restores structure. Product placed superficially adds bulk to the lower face, which is the most common cause of a jaw that looks heavier rather than sharper after treatment.

Where laxity is a significant part of the picture, a collagen stimulator may be recommended instead of or alongside filler, and where the heaviness is muscular rather than skeletal, masseter treatment with botulinum toxin addresses it. Dr Sateei will set out which combination your jaw actually needs, and that may involve less filler than you expected or none.

Who jawline is for

Jawline filler may suit you if you are looking to:

  • Restore definition where the bony support of the jaw has receded
  • Sharpen the transition between the jaw and the neck
  • Improve jaw definition alongside chin projection
  • Address early softening of the lower face structurally rather than superficially

It is not the right treatment where skin laxity is the dominant change, where the heaviness is caused by enlarged masseter muscles, or where fat beneath the chin is what is blurring the line. Each of those has a different answer, and filler applied to any of them tends to make the lower face heavier.

As an injectable treatment, it is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What to expect, and when you will see results

Treatment takes around 30 to 45 minutes depending on whether the chin is treated alongside. Numbing cream is applied and most products contain lidocaine.

Mild swelling or bruising can occur and typically settles within a few days. Most patients return to normal activities immediately. The jaw holds its shape quickly, so the result reads close to final within a week.

Jawline filler generally lasts twelve to eighteen months, towards the longer end of the range, because the area is structural and dense.

Benefits of jawline filler

  • Structural definition: placed deep to restore the jaw’s support rather than to add bulk
  • Sharper jaw-to-neck transition: improves the line that most affects how defined the lower face reads
  • Longer lasting: twelve to eighteen months in a dense, low-movement area

Dr Ellie Sateei on Jawline filler

“A soft jawline is not one problem, it is three, and they do not respond to the same treatment. If the skin has loosened, filler will make it heavier. If the chewing muscle has enlarged, filler will make it wider. If the bone has receded, filler is exactly right. Working out which one you have takes ten minutes at consultation and saves you from paying for the wrong answer.”

Dr Ellie Sateei has over two decades of experience in dermatology and aesthetics.

Jawline filler FAQs

How much does jawline filler cost?

From £650 in London. Your consultation is £195, deducted from the cost of treatment if you go ahead on the day.

How long does jawline filler last?

Generally twelve to eighteen months. The jaw is structural and dense, so it is among the longer-lasting filler areas.

Will jawline filler fix a sagging jaw?

Only where the cause is receded bony support. Where the skin has loosened, adding volume tends to increase heaviness, and a collagen stimulator is more appropriate.

Is jawline filler done with chin filler?

Usually, yes. Projection at the chin gives the jawline a defined point to run towards, so the two are commonly planned together.

Could my heavy jaw be muscular rather than volume loss?

It can be. Enlarged masseter muscles create width that filler would add to. That is treated with botulinum toxin instead, and assessed at consultation.

Is there downtime after jawline filler?

Most patients return to normal activities immediately. Mild swelling or bruising can occur and typically settles within a few days.

The Next Step

Jawline filler restores definition where the jaw’s structure has receded, and makes things worse where laxity or muscle is the cause. The most useful next step is establishing which of the three applies to you before any product is chosen. Dr Ellie Sateei sees patients at her London clinic.
